Grateful for:
- Sleeping in the tent in the middle of a jungle!
- Waking up early morning to the calls of birds… and a family of resident howler monkeys.
- Seeing lots of wildlife on our drive through the jungle national reserve – turkeys, foxes, family of black hairy pigs and monkeys.
- Walking for at least 3 hours straight around the massive jungle complex of Calakmul, spotting stelae, monkey, turkeys, but rarely any people!
- Climbing to the tops of Mayan pyramids for an awe inspiring vista of the jungle around was unforgettable.
- Seeing a massive ant nest migration in process, it was incredible, like a small river of ants crossing the trail.
- A nature reserve and largest ruin complex in one, Calakmul was a perfect spot to feed both of our top 2 reasons for traveling.
- Visiting multiple other ruins in the area for the past 3 days, each with a unique feature and story.
- Seeing an awesome difference between the road through the jungle in the morning and then in the afternoon. Nature is a true artist.
